A viral Vietnamese coconut coffee is one of those hot drinks you could sip anytime to make you feel like your having something luxurious in a fancy café. This home made recipe will make any coffee lover happy with it’s smooth taste balanced with the perfect sweetness to pair with it’s tropical flavour found across many cafes in Vietnam. We loved this drink from the first time we tried it and recreated everything in the most authentic way to share with our readers to enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 Vietnamese phin brew or 1 double shot espresso, about 30 ml or 1 fl oz
  • 100 ml or 1/3 cup full fat coconut milk or coconut cream, well shaken
  • 30 to 40 ml or 2 to 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 generous cup ice cubes
  • Optional topping: a small pinch of toasted coconut flakes or a light dusting of coffee powder

Instructions

  • Brew the coffee first. If using a phin, let it drip fully so the coffee is strong and concentrated. If using espresso, pull a double shot. Set aside to cool slightly so it does not melt the ice too fast later.
  • Add the coconut milk or coconut cream, sweetened condensed milk and ice cubes to a blender.
  • Blend until very thick, smooth and creamy. It should look like soft snow or a milkshake that holds its shape. If it looks too thin, add a little more ice and blend again.
  • Pour the brewed coffee into a tall glass. For the best result, the glass should be chilled if possible.
  • Spoon or pour the coconut mixture gently on top of the coffee.
  • Add the optional topping if using.
  • Stir just before drinking so the coffee and coconut mix together evenly. Taste and adjust sweetness next time if needed by adding more or less condensed milk.
