A blue agave margarita is made with just a few simple ingredients that work together for a bright and refreshing cocktail. You use blanco tequila made from 100 percent blue agave, blue curaçao, fresh lime juice and a little agave nectar if you want extra sweetness. It is shaken with ice and served over fresh ice for the best flavour and colour. The result is a crisp citrus drink with a smooth tequila base and a vibrant blue look.
A blue agave margarita is usually about the same strength as a classic margarita because the alcohol comes mainly from the tequila which is the same base spirit. The blue curaçao adds flavour and colour but not a huge amount of extra strength. What can change the strength is how much agave nectar or juice you add. If you keep it balanced, it drinks smooth but still has a noticeable kick like any traditional margarita drink.
Yes blue curaçao is actually what gives a blue agave margarita its signature colour and citrus sweetness. It is similar to triple sec in that both are orange flavoured liqueurs but blue curaçao adds that bright blue appearance. It also tends to taste slightly sweeter so you may want to adjust the lime juice or agave nectar depending on your preference.
You do not need agave nectar but it helps round out the drink. Since tequila and lime juice are quite strong and sharp a small amount of agave nectar can soften the edges and make the drink more balanced. If you prefer a tarter drink, you can leave it out completely. It really comes down to how sweet or crisp you like your cocktail.
The best choice is a blanco tequila made from 100 percent blue agave. Blanco tequila is clear, fresh tasting and has a clean agave flavour that works perfectly in a margarita. It blends smoothly with lime and blue curaçao without overpowering the drink. A good quality tequila will make a big difference in how smooth and enjoyable your cocktail tastes.
Balancing a blue agave drink comes down to adjusting the lime juice and agave nectar. If it tastes too sweet, add a little more fresh lime juice to brighten it up. If it feels too sour then add a small splash more agave nectar to smooth it out. Shaking it well with ice also helps bring everything together so the flavours taste more unified and refreshing.
